The Green Tourism Visitor Transport Project

Making The Right Connexions

·         Providing the right connexions is the key to making car-free visits to our beautiful area possible.

  • This innovative project supports and links together the areas existing attractions making them more viable.
  • Short-Breaks, Shoulder-Season-Specials, Heritage-Tours, Group-Visits, Themed-visits and much more
  • A one-stop Booking Service will arrange the Accommodation, the itinerary and the Transport!

  Historic Busses Providing Tourist Transport

 Project Aim:

This community based project aims to promote managed tourism and increased income to the immediate and neighbouring areas by offering alternatives to the use of cars.

The Project will enhance visitor experiences with its unique Heritage Transport Vehicles and  link local networked accommodation providers, tourism organisations and transport operators including Dartmoor Railway, so that the attractions of the area can be marketed to visitors seeking a car-free visitor experience.

How the Project Works

The Project works by using Historic Busses, Motor Coaches and Trains whereby the visitor experience is uniquely enhanced giving added value and interest at the same time addressing car journey reduction, reducing negative environmental impact, and fostering a unique selling point to attract visitors.

The project will also provide connections and transfers for inward visitors between accommodation providers and the areas and attractions visitors wish to visit. The project will enable a totally car free visitor experience as an attractive alternative to the use of the car.

The Project works NOW!  Limited services are currently available, but we would like to expand and need your support to help our Green Tourism Transport Operations really take off.

Details of The Green Tourism and Visitor Transport Project

Project Objectives:

·         Formalise links with local providers of Historic Vehicles, Busses, Coaches and Railways to establish a package of locally integrated visitor transport based on providing a car-free visitor experience.

·         Establish a network of accommodation and attraction providers as partners capable of supporting the car-free experience

·         Produce Business Plan and secure funding to develop wholly owned fleet and community enterprise. (Project currently hires ministry approved vehicles, drivers etc., at a preferential rate)

·         Engage with partners to market the concept and export project to other communities

 Evidence of Need:

This concept of car-free tourism is already in operation elsewhere within the County and Nationally recognised as Heritage Transport. Car reduction such as this is also receiving considerable support as illustrated by Devon County Councils Regeneration Role and Action Programme 2004 highlighting its Sustainable Transport strategy it states: “During the 1990’s, Devon County Council had been successful in developing a sustainable and integrated transport network of bus and train services linking the urban areas of Devon with the Dartmoor National Park and its adjoining areas. This network, which had been promoted against the background of the Dartmoor TPP Package, recognised the national and indeed international value of the National Park’s environment. It had as a key aim encouraging those who have a car to visit Dartmoor by public transport as well as making Dartmoor accessible to those without their own transport”.  Every local visitor attraction asked would welcome extra visitors, particularly in the shoulder season. And yes, the busses are great fun!

Project Outcomes:

·         Increased income generated for the area through managed tourism

·         Creation of direct and indirect employment

·         Supports all attractions, including new and existing tourist venues

·         Enhances the area as a tourist destination by offering a Unique Selling Point

·         Address the need to reduce car journeys within the area

·         Address environmental impact.

Indicative Costings:

·         The Cost of Individual bookings and contracts are currently available on application and are priced according to customer requirements

·         Phase One 2005:  Initial funding to undertake feasibility study to provide further evidence of visitor numbers, income stream and customer base. Estimate £3,000.00

·         Phase Two 2005/6: Develop Business Plan for stand alone operation and fleet acquisition Estimate £ 5,000.00

·         Phase Three 2006/7 Implement schedules, contracts and services. An estimate of annual running costs not possible at this stage as it will depend on size of fleet and nature of partnerships and contracts to be undertaken.
